In the mean time, I'm using our Artic Chill weather for some fun science activites. In the morning the kids got a container of any kind, added water, and found something to put in the water. They added letter magnets, shapes, maniuplatives, doll house people, etc. Then we placed them in different places outside. Some in the shade, some in the sun, some on black asphalt, some on white cement, some on the playground equipment, etc. Throughout the day we checked on them and talked and journaled about what we were seeing. They had very cool observations!
B-"Look at that! My "B"sank to the bottom of my cup and when i move my cup. my B still moves, but there is ice on the top. It's just a little ice, see I can poke it."
C- "My water is shallow. It's in a bowl, not a cup, that's why. My water is ice all the way through. It's like one big ice bowl.
L-"I knew the slide was the best place! See mine is ice first. My water became ice so it can slide down, but not spill. It wants to slide down. Can it slide down now? It won't spill, see!"

Very cool!
I grew up in South Carolina, so I know how rare it is to have really cold weather. What a great teacher to take advantage of it. Flexibility is our best tool, right?
